Research | Boston Children's Hospital Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship

Goal:

To enhance teaching across the hospital, foster scholarship in education, and support career advancement for educators. We will work to achieve these goals by establishing an interprofessional and multi-disciplinary learning community that promotes educational collaboration and resource sharing through seminars, workshops, networking, and consultation on teaching skills and CV/resume development.  Members must be committed to improving their teaching or leadership in education, with an ultimate goal to contribute to scholarship in health professional education.  Through the Academy’s efforts, we aim to foster recognition of Boston Children's teachers locally and as national and international leaders. 

The Academy expands upon current departmental offerings and co-sponsors educational activities with the Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Office of Faculty Development. Membership terms are for one year and are renewable contingent on meeting Academy requirements, including providing feedback on Academy programming.

Eligibility: 
To be considered for membership, BCH staff must have a faculty appointment or have a role at BCH that explicitly emphasizes teaching and/or educational leadership.  All health care professionals who meet these criteria are eligible.  Once a member, attendance at 6 hours of Academy programming per year is required; scholar members have additional maintenance requirements related to their project in education.

There are now 3 categories of membership:

• Regular Membership (requires 6 hours of participation/year): faculty appointment or formal educational role as part of position at BCH; annual report; members have access to all Academy programming
• Scholar Membership (6 hours participation, plus a scholarly project): faculty appointment or formal educational role as part of position at BCH; commitment to pursuing scholarship in education (must have feasible project); 6 hours of participation per year including 3 hours of participation in assigned project group; documented progress on project;  presentation of project to assigned project group every 2 years; annual report; members have access to all programming plus research design and statistical support
• Trainee Membership (6 hours participation, with or without a project): at least one remaining year of training at BCH; 6 hours of participation per year (can include medical education programming in residency or fellowship); annual report; members have access to all programming

*Activities include: retreats with keynote and workshops, seminars, peer observation, education CV consultation, project group meetings, interest group meetings

All non-trainee members must have a faculty appointment or a position at BCH as an educator.  All members must submit annual reports. Maintenance requirements are below:
