RHINO Mites: Research on Heterogeneity in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

RHINO Mites study logoThe Arnett Lab is currently enrolling 2.5-4 year-old participants for the RHINO-Mites Study. The goal of this study is to identify pre-diagnostic brain markers associated with familial risk for ADHD and ADHD outcomes. Methods include electroencephalography (EEG), in which we measure brain activity in a comfortable and fun way for the children, as well as neuropsychological testing and an interview with a caregiver. Funding for the RHINO-Mites study is provided to Dr. Arnett by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

General Information about Participation

  • Your family may be eligible to participate if you have a child who is 2.5-4 years old.
  • The goal of our study is to learn more about how brain activity relates to individual differences in symptoms related to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD).
  • We are recruiting children who have immediate family members with ADHD as well as children without familial risk for ADHD (i.e., controls).
  • First step: caregiver completes a 10-minute screening phone call.
  • After that, you and/or another one of your child’s caregivers may be asked to complete a remote interview that takes 30-60 minutes.
  • Your child may be invited to complete an in-person research visit at our laboratory at Two Brookline Place.
  • 6, 12, and 18 months after your lab visit, we will ask you and another adult who knows your child well (e.g., teacher, daycare provider, babysitter) to complete follow up online surveys (10 minutes).
  • Lastly, 18 months after your lab visit, a caregiver will be asked to complete a follow-up 30-60-minute remote interview about your child’s development and behavior.

Information about the In-person Visits

  • The visit will last about 3 hours.
  • We will give you parking validation or reimbursement for public transportation.
  • During the visit, your child will complete an EEG (electroencephalogram), which is a non-invasive way of measuring brain activity.
  • During the visit, we will complete a neuropsychological assessment (cognitive and pre-academic testing) with your child.

More Information about EEG

  • EEG is painless and non-invasive.
  • During the EEG, we put a cap (similar to a swim cap) on your child’s head while your child watches videos and plays simple games.
  • You can take pictures and see your child’s brain waves.
  • The EEG lasts about an hour.
  • Please view a short EEG introductory video.

More Information about the Cognitive and Academic Testing

  • We will measure your child’s general cognitive development and pre-academic skills.
  • You will be provided with a written report about your child’s performance on cognitive and academic tests, which can be sent directly to your child’s primary care provider if you choose. If applicable, the report will also include recommendations tailored to your child.

Compensation

  • $40 for the research visit
  • $10 gift card emailed to both you and the other adult responder each time we receive the completed 6, 12, and 18 month online surveys (potential total of $30 per responder for completing all follow up measures)
  • Reimbursement for parking or public transportation
  • Toys/prizes for your child
