Adolescent and parent perspectives on medical decision-making for chronic illness

Summary: Patients with chronic rheumatic diseases and their parents were studied to determine their perceptions about medical decision making (MDM). The authors found that both adolescents and parents who valued participation in MDM were more involved in their medical care.

Summary: In this study, Dr. Dedeoglu and her collaborators aimed to study how patient experience in children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) contributed to health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study showed that adverse treatment effects, in addition to active disease, play a substantial role in patients' quality of life (QOL). They recommended these metrics to be routinely assessed during clinical care.

A Screening Tool for Assessing Alcohol Use Risk among Medically Vulnerable Youth

Summary: Dr. Dedeoglu and several other collaborators tested the efficacy and validity of the Youth Alcohol Screening Tool in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They found that this screening tool was accurate in identifying alcohol use in adolescence with arthritis.
