Going outside isn’t an option for me right now. How can I be active?

Move your workout inside

There may be many reasons why you can’t go outdoors. The good news is that there are many good options for indoor activity and exercise. Preparing a list of indoor activities will set you up for success!

  • Think about whether going outside is a challenge for you. How often is it a challenge?
  • You might not be able to go outside for a variety of reasons. Some kids say:
    • "I don’t live near a park or playground."
    • “My neighborhood is unsafe."
    • "It's raining." "It's too cold." "It's too hot."
  • Can you relate? What could you do?

Explore the indoors

  • Clear a space in your home where you can move around. Make sure there are no tripping hazards.
  • Exercise DVDs are great for those bad weather days! All you need is a television, DVD player, and an open area.
  • Active video games can increase heart rate, breathing, and sweating! You will want to get off the couch and move.
  • Dance in your room to your favorite music. Or create a brand new dance routine!
  • Perform a circuit of six exercises such as jumping jacks, squats, and push-ups. No equipment required! Only a small room is needed. Do each exercise for 45 seconds, with 15 seconds rest in-between. Other exercises and a sample Boston Children’s fit kit Circuit can be found on our vigorous intensity fitness page.

Seek open public space

  • Visit your local community center to go swimming, shoot hoops, or do other available activities.
  • Walk at a fast pace around a local shopping mall. Some malls may have walking clubs or maps.
