Benderson Family Heart Center | Preventive Cardiology Fellowship

The Advanced Fellowship in Preventive Cardiology in the Division of Outpatient Cardiology, Department of Cardiology, Children’s Hospital Boston, aims to promote the clinical and academic training of physicians specializing in pediatric preventive cardiology and to support and advance clinical research on the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular risk during childhood. Trainees who participate in this 12 month Advanced Fellowship in Preventive Cardiology will be immersed into this active clinical, research, and teaching environment with the goal of substantially augmenting their clinical and research skills. A second year of training will be considered in applicants who are interested in pursuing a career with a major focus in independent research. Trainees may elect to pursue advanced research methodological training; in general, the cost of this training is covered by the trainee.

Advanced training in pediatric preventive cardiology is achieved through hands-on training, seeing patients and participating in research and educational sessions. The senior Preventive Cardiology fellow is expected to actively participate in didactic and clinical conferences, including weekly Preventive Cardiology Research Meetings, to lead monthly journal clubs (3rd Thursday of the month), to attend monthly Preventive Cardiology Rounds (third Thursday of the month), as well as to take advantage of other learning opportunities in the Department and in the Longwood Medical Area (e.g. Harvard School of Public Health CVD Epi Friday Forum). Additional learning opportunities can be explored in areas such as (but not limited to), management of extreme childhood obesity, Kawasaki Disease, non-invasive vascular testing. Previous trainees have had joint training experiences with the Framingham Heart Study. In the past, trainee time has been split between research (70%) and clinical care (30%).
