Rotating residents
We are fortunate to participate in resident education and training through our affiliation with Harvard Medical School. Every month, one PGY-2 resident from Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospital’s OB/GYN Residency Program rotates with our division part-time in order to gain exposure in the field of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Their experience is a combination of outpatient clinic, operating room, and consultations in our emergency department and inpatient units.
Our service is a consultation service as well as one that collaborates in multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. We perform a large volume of inpatient and outpatient procedures/operations. Residents will be supervised and work directly with our Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology fellows and attendings to provide medical and surgical gynecologic care of children and adolescents. Residents are first call on nights, weekends, and two weekdays, and will often be the first-line provider to evaluate patients and discuss management plans with the multidisciplinary team. They can expect to participate in the medical decision-making, counseling, and act as first assist in the operating room.
We expect that residents become comfortable with performing pelvic examinations in the prepubescent child, identify common vulvar conditions and reproductive anomalies, as well as manage and counsel patients on common presentations including vulvovaginitis, vulvar dermatoses, straddle injuries, contraception, sexual health, abnormal uterine bleeding, menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, adnexal masses, and fertility preservation. We are a referral center for endometriosis and mullerian anomalies, so residents will gain experience in the diagnosis and management of these conditions in adolescents. Our residents also have the opportunity to rotate in our complex anomalies clinic and participate in the gynecologic care for transgender individuals, including menstrual suppression and gender-affirming hysterectomies.
Residents are also expected to participate in our monthly perioperative conference, where they will present on educational topics in preparation for upcoming surgical cases. They also present patient cases at our monthly M&M conference to reflect on challenging cases, interpret peer-reviewed literature, and provide recommendations for future care. They will also join our division in attending monthly multidisciplinary didactic conferences with Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine. We value our residents as an integral member of our team and aim to support the education of Ob/Gyn trainees in the field of pediatric and adolescent gynecology to increase the availability of providers with knowledge in the subspecialty.
