Researcher | Research Overview

Dr. Bo Zhang joined Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) as a faculty biostatistician in the Department of Neurology and the Biostatistics and Research Design (BARD) Center in the Institutional Centers of Clinical and Translational Research (ICCTR). He is the in-house lead faculty biostatistician in the Department of Neurology, supporting and collaborating with neurologist faculty members, residents, and fellows. Dr. Zhang’s scientific career has been devoted to developing innovative biostatistical methodologies for design and analysis of clinical trials and observational studies, as well as to conducting collaborative research with investigators in clinical and translational research and providing high-quality statistical support. At BCH, he is the Lead Biostatistician and Co-Investigator for several high-profile research programs in the Department of Neurology, including Dr. Scott Pomeroy’s Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center and Dr. Mustafa Sahin’s Developmental Synaptopathies Consortium to study rare genetic syndromes that often cause autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability with early childhood onset.

Dr. Zhang has dedicated enormous efforts to independent methodological research in design and analysis of complex clinical trials and clinical data science. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed research publications in top-tier biostatistical and medical journals. As a principal investigator, he was the recipient of the Life Science Moment Fund awarded by the University of Massachusetts Center for Clinical and Translational Science and established the cross-campus University of Massachusetts Health Policy Research Laboratory. From his collaborative research in clinical and translational medicine, he has received, as a co-investigator and biostatistician, numerous extramural research grants that reached a cumulative amount of over $15 million. He has been an editorial board member of a first-tier biostatistics journal, Statistical Methods in Medical Research. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of top-tier biostatistics and medical journals. He has been invited to give academic presentations in a number of regional, national, and international research institutes, and has delivered a keynote speech in one international forum on clinical trial design and methodology. He has served as a panel member and scientific reviewer for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Clinical Data Coordinating Center program and NIH Small Business for Neuro/Psychopathology, Lifespan Development, and STEM Education program.

Researcher | Research Background

In October 2019, Dr. Zhang joined Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) as a biostatistician and a faculty member in the Department of Neurology and the Biostatistics and Research Design Center (BARD) in the Institutional Centers of Clinical and Translational Research (ICCTR). Dr. Zhang completed his PhD degree in statistics with a minor in biostatistics at the University of Minnesota (08/2009), and completed his postdoctoral training, including a fellowship, in the Division of Intramural Population Health Research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (10/2009-09/2011). Prior to joining BCH, he served as Mathematical Statistician and Scientific Reviewer in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (03/2014-06/2017), and was Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, tenure-track, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (06/2017-10/2019).
