We are studying how anesthetic agents modulate the immune system and how this affects postoperative outcomes, mainly surgical site infections. The ultimate goal is to be able to tailor anesthetic regimens to optimize perioperative immune functions (“Immuno-Anesthesia”). The principal focus is on understanding how anesthetics affect neutrophil function and various critical adhesion molecules. Related work studies the role of neutrophil subsets and adhesion molecules in sepsis pathophysiology.
