The mission of the Department of Pharmacy is to provide excellent and innovative pharmaceutical care to patients and the community through safe and collaborative practices, incorporating education, research, and technology.
The Department of Pharmacy has more than 200 employees consisting of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and administrative staff who provide a broad range of advanced pharmacy services 24 hours a day. The pharmacy is structured to provide the scope of service required of all patients being treated at Boston Children's Hospital.
Pharmacists are involved in all aspects of medication therapy management, including housewide medication order review and all medication distribution activities. Pharmacists participate in patient care team rounds in areas with complex and high-risk medication therapy including critical care, emergency services, infectious disease, cardiology, transplantation, medicine, ambulatory care, oncology, surgery, and trauma, and help determine appropriate pharmaceutical products for each patient based on patient needs. Pharmacists also provide drug information, pharmacokinetic services, renal dose adjustment, drug-drug interaction review, code response, and antimicrobial stewardship to assist in improved outcomes for patients at Boston Children's Hospital. Pharmacy technicians prepare, restock, and deliver patient medication orders as directed by a registered pharmacist(s) in a ready-to-administer form.
The Department of Pharmacy is equipped with state-of-the-art pharmacy information systems and technology to meet the complex treatment needs of our patients.
