Susan Mahan | Professional History
Dr. Susan Mahan is involved in the clinical practice of pediatric orthopedic surgery as well as clinical research and quality improvement activities. She leads our Lower Extremity Clinical Research Group, focusing on improving the care and outcomes of children with lower extremity disorders. She is the physician leader of the Department of Orthopedics Quality Improvement Program and is part of the Boston Children’s Quality Improvement Clinical Outcomes Committee.
Dr. Mahan’s area of excellence is clinical outcomes research and its applicability both in clinical research as well as quality improvement initiatives. Her clinical practice focuses on the lower extremity, particularly treatment of clubfoot, and her ongoing research activities mirror this.
Dr. Mahan is also involved in teaching and educating the medical students, residents and fellows who rotate through the orthopedic service. Typically, these are orthopedic residents and fellows who are on the orthopedic service, although she has also taught other residents. Dr. Mahan provides clinical teaching during clinics and the operating room, didactic teaching to the orthopedic residents while they are at Boston Children’s and didactic teaching to the Harvard orthopedic resident group annually. Dr. Mahan is also annually involved in helping teach the musculoskeletal physical exam unit for Harvard medical students.
