Shannon Hourigan | Professional History

After completing my BA in psychology at Vassar College and gaining several years of clinical and research experience in Boston, I pursued my MS and PhD in Clinical Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA where I conducted research to better understand how to provide high quality, evidence-based treatments to children and families in community settings. With the support of psychologist and physician mentors alike, I discovered my passion for working with children and adolescents with acute or chronic medical conditions and pursued a career at the intersection of psychology and medicine. Following an internship in Pediatric Psychology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a post-doctoral psychology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, I joined the staff at BCH and have been lucky to work with children, adolescents, and families coping with all aspects of chronic and acute medical conditions. As an Attending Psychologist in the Medical Coping Clinic in the Outpatient Psychology Service, the Inherited Cardiac Arrhythmias Program, and the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, I provide evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with acute or chronic medical conditions and a co-morbid emotional or behavioral concern while participating in teaching, training, and research projects in these areas.

As a pediatric psychologist, I work with children, adolescents, and families with a wide variety of emotional and behavioral concerns related to their medical conditions. My goal is to empower children and families to cope with medically related challenges by developing individualized treatment plans that leverage families’ strengths and evidence-based care to help patients reach their potential.
