The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition is part of one of the best children's hospitals in the country (U.S. News & World Report). Our team of highly specialized doctors works alongside an equally dedicated team of clinicians, including extraordinary nurses and advanced care providers, to deliver the highest level of quality pediatric care to our patients.

Dedicated to innovation in pediatric care

  • Every year we schedule more than 40,000 patient visits and perform more than 4,000 procedures in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.
  • We have both comprehensive gastroenterologists and subspecialists, ensuring your patient will see the right pediatric clinician for their presenting symptoms or diagnosed condition.
  • We see patients in more than 15 subspecialty centers.
  • The clinicians at Boston Children’s Hospital are leaders in clinical gastrointestinal research, actively searching for innovative ways to advance treatments and improve the quality of care we provide to each patient.

Our faculty and fellows regularly attract major research support from the National Institutes of Health, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, and a number of other agencies. Four past presidents of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) have been Boston Children's doctors, and the faculties are the recipients of prestigious training and research awards, including four winners of the Shwachmann Award, the highest award of the NASPGHAN.

How to refer a patient

We offer both rapid and nonurgent referrals.

  • Our innovative Rapid Response Program is designed to aid pediatricians requesting urgent referrals for their patients. To reach our rapid response nurse, please call 617-355-6369 and have the GI rapid response nurse paged. You can expect a call back within 30 minutes.
  • For nonurgent referrals please call 617-355-6058.

We are dedicated to a strong partnership with you, the referring provider, to ensure you have the information you need for your patient. You can elect to receive reports by fax or email to speed communication with our specialists. If you have any questions, call our rapid response line and speak to our nurse.
