The Boston Children's Hospital Kidney Transplant team tracks and reviews many different quality metrics related to the performance of our program. We use these metrics to constantly improve the care of children undergoing kidney transplantation.
Transplant volume
Our Kidney Transplant Program is one of the largest pediatric programs in the country. Since its inception, it has performed more than 950 kidney transplants, including deceased donor and living donor. The majority of our transplant recipients are children less than 18 years old.
Transplant outcomes
Outcomes data are published biannually by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). The data below was released in January 2023.
Pediatric (<18) patient survival rates
Patient survival rates represent the percent of patients alive following a period of time after transplant. Our one and three-year patient survival rates exceed the national average. One-year data is for single organ transplants occurring between 7/1/19 and 3/12/2020, and 6/13/2020 and 12/31/21. Three-year data is for transplants occurring between 1/1/17-6/30/19.
Boston Children’s Hospital Kidney Transplant team cares for and transplants some of the most complex patients. Patient and graft survival can be impacted by, among other things, recurrence of the primary disease, complications related to transplant, including poor adherence to medications schedules and the impact of long-term immunosuppression and complications due to other medical issues.
