Building a Robust Health Care Workforce | Overview
Challenge
A nation of more than 10 million people, Rwanda provides almost universal health care. Due to a critical shortage of skilled health workers, however, the country has struggled to meet the health needs of its citizens.
Where We Started
The Government of Rwanda launched the Human Resources for Health (HRH) Program to build the health care education infrastructure and workforce necessary for a high-quality, sustainable health care system. The HRH Program is addressing some of the country’s most challenging health care obstacles, including the traditionally poor quality of health education.
Our Impact
Boston Children’s Hospital is part of a consortium of 23 partner academic institutions in the United States spanning medicine, nursing, midwifery, dentistry and public health that has committed to sending clinical faculty to hospitals and schools of medicine and nursing throughout Rwanda. The plan is to complete a transition of education to Rwandan faculty and health care personnel within a seven-year timeframe. Clinician educators from Boston Children’s have played a major role in implementing these trainings.
