Tyonne D. Hinson

As Director of Nursing Diversity Initiatives and the Nursing Career Lattice Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Tyonne D. Hinson, DrPH, MSN, RN, NE-BC leads and directs enterprise level initiatives to strengthen the recruitment, retention, advancement and inclusion of all members of the nursing workforce as a platform to promote health equity and reduce child health disparities. She also contributes to a broad range of nursing and patient care-focused diversity, inclusion, and health equity activities.

She is a 2018-2019 graduate of the MGH Disparities Leadership Program and serves as a partner to internal and external committees/groups focused on increasing diversity and inclusion among the face of nurses and health care professionals in the local Boston and national region.

With over 20 years of experience in nursing, Dr. Hinson blends a strong background in executive nursing leadership, neonatal intensive care and maternal-fetal health, international, public and global health, as well as health equity and cross-cultural competencies.

She began her nursing career as a neonatal intensive care staff nurse at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Philadelphia, PA, followed by an appointment as clinical nurse manager at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA. Prior to her current role, Dr. Hinson held a wide range of roles at CHOP, including Senior Director of Nursing, Neonatal Intensive Care and Special Delivery Unit; Director, International Medicine and Global Health Nursing; and leadership of numerous diversity, inclusion, and equity-focused programs and strategies to build nursing and clinically-focused workforce capacity. She has published and presented in many fields consistent with her preparation and roles.

Dr. Hinson holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with a focus in Healthcare Administration from Villanova University, Villanova, PA, a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC).

Dr. Hinson holds adjunct faculty appointments for University North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health and Villanova University Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. She also serves as faculty for the Nurse Manager Leadership Certificate Program at Villanova University. Dr. Hinson is a member of the Board of Consultors for the Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and the DrPH Advisory Board for Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is the 2019 Villanova University Dr. Terry Nancy Award for Inclusive Excellence Recipient and a 2021 Boston Children’s Hospital Black Achiever Awardee.
