Tien-Lan Chang | Professional History

Dr. Chang completed his general pediatrics residency and decided to get additional training in pediatric gastroenterology. After a number of years in laboratory research, he decided to stay in clinical practice. Eventually he transitioned from a specialist to a primary care pediatrician. Having a strong background in pediatric gastroenterology means less need for referral to that specialty.

My first contact with a patient in a hospital setting was when I volunteered as an interpreter. I saw the loneliness of an elderly man and the difficulties of the family members trying to communicate with medical staff. I went into medicine to bridge that communication gap by listening to patients. I try to educate patients on preventive health care, including vaccinations.
