Nicole Baumer | Professional History

Dr. Baumer is a board certified child neurologist and pediatrician, specializing in the care of children with complex neurodevelopmental disabilities. She graduated from Skidmore College and Harvard Medical School.  She also obtained a Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she focused on Special Education and educational research.   Dr. Baumer sees patients in the Neurology Department and in the Developmental Medicine Center at Boston Children’s Hospital.  She specializes in the treatment of individuals with Down syndrome, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and neurobehavioral disorders. In addition to clinical care, she is working to develop a robust research program within the Down Syndrome Program to study potential therapeutics that may positively impact learning, memory, and behavior for children with Down syndrome. Her main research focus involves characterization of medical, developmental, and behavioral profiles of children with Down syndrome, and exploring educational strategies and behavioral and medical interventions for individuals with Down syndrome.

I believe that every child and family deserves to be in the center of a medical team that attends to the assessment and treatment of medical conditions, but also to maximizing the child’s quality of life and functioning at home, school, and within the community. My older sister has Down syndrome, and I have had lifelong experiences with individuals with developmental disabilities. With interest and training in both medicine and education, I found a perfect professional home in the newly developed field of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. This training provided a foundation in general pediatrics and child neurology, with special focus and experiences in developmental behavioral pediatrics and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Outside of work, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Federation for Children with Special Needs, the Massachusetts Special Education Advisory Council, and the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress Scientific Advisory Committee.
